With spring not too far away, many riders will be taking out their motorcycles to hit the road for the first time in months. With the smell of fresh air, the wind hitting your face, and the endless freedom ahead of you it’s a complete joy ride.
However, it’s not always a joy ride if you or a loved one gets into an accident. In fact, motorcyclists are 30 times more likely to be killed in an accident than drivers in a vehicle. Of course, that number may seem scary, but there are many ways to protect yourself from becoming another statistic.
The first step in safe riding may seem obvious, but sadly many riders ignore it: wear proper protection such as, a good helmet. In fact, while a helmet can’t prevent an accident, it sure can help prevent one from being fatal. You may want to avoid helmet hair or miss the breeze in your hair, but you’ll never be able to enjoy the freedom of riding ever again if you aren’t wearing a helmet during a serious incident.
Your motorcycle also needs proper gear as well, and if it’s been sitting in your garage for months chances are it needs some TLC. Check to make sure everything, such as the lights, brakes, and blinkers are working properly. It’s also a good measure to check the tires’ PSI as well. You wouldn’t want an accident to occur because of faulty wiring or brakes on your bike. So, do a thorough check before you ride.
Education is also a great tool for anyone looking to protect themselves. Moreover, many places throughout Connecticut offer proper motorcycle training for beginners and seasoned riders. The Motorcycle Awareness Campaign is also a great group to be a part of. Not only do they educate riders about safety, but they educate the public to be on the lookout for motorcycles when driving in a vehicle. They also give back heavily to our veterans, which is something our insurance agency stands behind. It’s a great opportunity to do good, while also educating others.
Of course, it’s also important to make sure that you have the proper motorcycle insurance in place. You don’t want to be caught in an accident at fault and aren’t properly covered for it. This could result in serious liabilities you would have to pay out of pocket, such as medical expenses and property damage. Let’s face it, distracted driving is at an all time high with people talking on their phones, fiddling with their GPS, texting, and talking to other passengers; a driver may not notice you in their blind spot while distracted. Then all of a sudden, you’re on the ground hurt with a damaged bike. You shouldn’t have to pay the consequences of another motorist’s mistake, and that’s where we come in. We’re here to make sure you’re protected no matter what.
Plus, as a customer you’ll gain access to our Insurance Agent App, which is available on both Android and Apple devices. Our app can store your ID cards, pictures of your bike, and even make a claim during an accident.
Before you hit the road this spring make sure you and your motorcycle are properly protected. Do you own a motorcycle? If so, where are your favorite places to go? We’d love to hear about it in the comments below!
