Distracted driving is just plain dangerous, we all know this.  But no matter how hard we try, it seems as though every once in a while, we find ourselves doing something other than paying attention to the road.  Now while more experienced drivers may be able to handle this distraction, those who are new to the roads, mostly teenagers, do not have the experience behind the wheel to handle a distraction while driving.

Unfortunately, texting while driving is the number distraction, and sadly, the number one cause of death of American teens.  Furthermore, it’s not helping matters when cell phones are ever becoming more and more popular with younger adults. What’s even worse is that the teens are being tempted more and more by their parents to respond to text messages while driving!

That’s why organizations like Vanderbilt University and country superstars TimMcGraw, Taylor Swift, and Keith Urban worked together to produce this moving video.

The average text message takes the driver’s eyes off the road for 4 – 5 seconds, and when you’re driving at 60 mph, your car travels approximately the length of a football field in this short time! Take a second to think about that staggering statistic. Would you volunteer to drive the length of an entire football field with your eyes covered, essentially rendering you blind? No?  That’s exactly what you do, however, if you text and drive.

As parents, we need to do everything we can to ensure that our teen drivers areas safe as possible on the road, and furthermore realize the deadly consequences that can result from driving while distracted by a cell phone, a friend in the car, or something else. Not only will this reflect well in your family’s CT auto insurance, but it will also just plain make everyone safer on the road…and that’s really what we all want!
