We should always be prepared for whatever life throws at us.  Usually, we are prepared for life’s tests, and a sign of this preparation is different insurance policies that ensure we are covered in the case of an accident or unforeseen event.  Not all policies cover as much as you may think though.  You may need just that little extra to be positive your livelihood won’t be lost.  Sometimes life decides to throw an extra hard curve ball to see if we are ready.  In regards to insurance, having CT umbrella insurance allows you to know that curve ball out of the park.

Basically, umbrella insurance is coverage that protects and goes above and beyond your typical homeowners insurance or auto insurance policy.  For example, if you have an auto insurance policy with liability limits of $400,000 and a homeowners insurance policy with a limit of $275,000, then with a million dollar CT umbrella insurance policy, your limits become $1,400,000 on the auto liability claim and $1,275,000 on the homeowners liability claim.

Your umbrella policy is a must-have incase anything happens on your home’s property, in your car, on your boat, or any other policy that the umbrella covers.  It can be used to pay any of the following:

  • Injured person’s medical bills
  • Rehabilitative therapy
  • Lost wages
  • Legal fees

In case you need more persuasion, here’s a real life umbrella scenario:

The Insured’s 18 year old son was driving the Insured’s car on a short trip to the store with his girlfriend, the Claimant.  The car left the roadway and struck a tree.  The Insured’s son told the police that a vehicle cut him off, but there were no witnesses and no evidence of any impact with another car.  The Claimant has no recollection of the accident.

The Claimant, a 19 year old college student, was hospitalized for over a month with multiple fractures and internal injuries.  She was in a wheelchair but is now able to walk with crutches and continues with physical therapy.  She has a right drop foot as a result of the injuries.  The Insured’s personal umbrella policy limit was paid.

An CT umbrella insurance policy can give you that one extra liability protection without adding a significant additional cost. It’s very inexpensive when you look at the amount of additional coverage you receive for what you pay.  Everyone should have umbrella insurance, case closed!
