If you have an old or weathered American Flag, it may be time for it to retire. Here at our insurance agency, we make sure to respect the American Flag in any way we possibly can, because our flag represents the sacrifices made by the many brave men and women who put their lives on the line to protect our freedoms.
Flag Day is approaching quickly, so around this time of the year, a lot of people will retire their old flags and replace them with a new one. After all, that’s the proper way to sport your American pride, and better yet, we make sure our flags are made in America. Although, there is a specific way to properly dispose of the American Flag, so our agency wanted to review proper flag disposal with you today.
Proper Flag Disposal Tips
The first way to properly dispose of a flag is in a ceremonial flag burning. It may sound dramatic, but this is actually very proper. This way of disposing the flag is not haphazard or unpatriotic, in fact, it’s the exact opposite. It requires a ceremony, a bonfire, a proper fold of the American Flag, and of course, a proper salute with the Pledge of Allegiance or National Anthem.
Another way you can properly dispose of your American Flag is with a flag burial. To bury the American Flag, you need to find a sturdy and dignified wooden box. After that, fold the flag correctly, and place it in the box, then bury it in the ground.
Flag shredding is another form of proper flag disposal as well. Shredding the flag may seem pretty harsh, but it’s still a respectable form of proper flag disposal. In order to shred the flag properly, you need to separate the thirteen stripes evenly with scissors, leaving the blue star-spangled corner in one piece. After it’s cut into pieces, you can place it in a respectful receptacle and bury or burn it using the above procedures.
