Today we recognize American Legion Day, a special day dedicated to honoring the American Legion’s program and efforts. The American Legion, Inc. is an organization formed by veterans of the American Expeditionary Forces (A. E. F.), and this special day is for celebrating the corporation’s anniversary.
The Legion has been the cause of significant social change in this country. They have produced many influential programs for youth and have won hundreds of benefits for veterans.
“The American Legion was chartered and incorporated by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization devoted to mutual helpfulness. It is the nation’s largest wartime veterans service organization, committed to mentoring youth and sponsorship of wholesome programs in our communities, advocating patriotism and honor, promoting strong national security, and continued devotion to our fellow service-members and veterans.”(1)
Legionnaires’ dedication to their community, state, and nation drives advocacy for veterans. Their volunteer leadership resolves important issues in the veterans community, in which success is dependent upon active membership, participation, and volunteerism.
